Instagram Relocates the Filter for Direct Messages

Instagram

Instagram moved the Direct Message (DM) filter. Instead of sitting in the top-right corner, it now appears to the left of folders like Primary, General, and Requests. The platform also hinted that more DM updates are on the way.

Why this matters: It's a small UX change, but one that can make a real difference for creators and brands who receive a high volume of DMs. Being able to more easily surface priority messages helps streamline communication, especially when time and attention are limited.

This update is part of a bigger push: Over the past few months, Instagram has added a string of new messaging features, including:

Taken together, these moves are making Instagram’s DMs more powerful and creator-friendly, positioning it closer to the functionality of platforms like iMessage and WhatsApp.

The competitive ripple effect: Instagram’s momentum in messaging is catching the attention of competitors. TikTok, for example, has been investing more into its own messaging features, giving users new ways to connect and communicate.

My take: Messaging has become a key battleground for engagement. For platforms, it's no longer just about feed-based content. It's about how well they support real, meaningful interactions behind the scenes.
