TikTok is updating its direct message settings. Soon, users can choose to receive message requests from both their followers (“Potential Connections”) and people they don’t follow (“Others”). These requests must be approved before conversations begin.

Messages from accounts a user follows will still go directly to their inbox.

The rollout will happen over the coming weeks. TikTok says the new settings will reflect users’ current preferences. For example, if someone has messaging turned off now, it will remain off by default.

Why It Matters: This change makes TikTok’s messaging more open, enabling new interactions even between unconnected users. It mirrors how messaging powers engagement on Instagram and could unlock new content discovery and community-building pathways, especially for younger audiences who prefer DM-driven social experiences
