Instagram Lets USers Add Tagged Posts To THeir Main PRofile GRid
Instagram will now let users add posts they’re tagged in to their main profile grid.
How the Feature Works
Users can add a tagged post from the Direct Message notification they receive when they’re tagged, directly from the post, or from the Tagged tab via an Add to grid option.
Once added, the post will appear on their main grid but can be removed at any time. The original post isn’t affected.
What It Means for Users, Creators & Brands
Users can now spotlight photos or videos they’re tagged in on their grid without having to upload them themselves or use a Collab post. Since the post is only added to the grid and not shared in the feed, it’s more of a curation tool than something that helps with distribution, like the Collab feature.
That could be useful for everyday users who want to showcase posts they’re tagged in with friends, or brands that want to feature posts they’re tagged in from creators showcasing their products.
The latter could create some issues, though. Creators will often tag brands in content to get their attention, but that doesn’t mean they’re giving the brand permission to use that content on its own channels. Brands should be thoughtful before adding a tagged post to their grid. Instagram should also consider adding controls around this, such as requiring approval before a post a user is tagged in can be added to their profile.
Instagram’s Push to Give Users More Control
This is part of a broader push from Instagram to give users more control over their profiles. Other recent efforts include the ability to rearrange posts across the grid, rearrange carousels posts after publishing, customize post thumbnails, and the testing of an option to post content directly to the grid and bypass having it shared in the feed.
That makes more sense when you consider that some users treat their grid as a visual journal and don’t necessarily care about whether their posts reach people in the feed. Instagram is essentially giving users more control over how they curate their profiles, rather than making every post about maximizing distribution.
