Threads Tests ‘Dear Algo’ Feature, Letting Users Tell THeir Feed What to Show
Threads
Threads, Instagram’s X competitor, is officially beta testing “Dear Algo,” an AI feature that lets users shape their feeds by telling Threads what they want to see more or less of.
Users can type “Dear Algo” in a post, followed by their preference for what they want or do not want to see, and their feed will adjust accordingly for up to three days.
For users with public profiles, others can see these Dear Algo requests and even repost them to try the preferences themselves.
Why It Matters: Dear Algo helps users personalize their feeds faster and more intentionally. Instead of training the algorithm by engaging more with certain content or reporting posts they aren’t interested in, users can directly tell Threads what they want and see changes reflected in near real time.
This is especially important as Threads works to become a hub for real time conversations, from pop culture to sporting events, where users want relevant content around trends and moments that matter to them.
Dear Algo is part of a broader shift. Social platforms are increasingly using AI to give users more control over what they see. Instagram has “Your Algorithm,” TikTok offers “Manage Topics,” and YouTube has “Customize Your Feed.” Across platforms, companies are tapping into AI to give users more influence over their feeds rather than relying entirely on opaque systems.
It is also smart business. The better platforms become at surfacing the right content at the right time, the more likely users are to stay engaged and spend more time on the app.
